Description

These Chicken Cheese Steak Sandwiches are a delicious and lighter alternative to the classic Philly cheesesteak, using tender chicken breast instead of beef, and loaded with melted cheese, onions, and bell peppers. This sandwich is a perfect balance of savory, melty goodness with a little crunch, served on a soft hoagie roll. It’s quick, flavorful, and makes for an easy, crowd-pleasing dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Chicken:

  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

For the Sandwiches:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium bell pepper, thinly sliced (green, red, or a mix)
  • 4 hoagie rolls or sandwich buns
  • 4 slices provolone cheese (or mozzarella/cheddar)
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise (optional for spreading on rolls)

Instructions

1. Season and Cook the Chicken:

  • Season the thinly sliced chicken breasts with garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  • Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Add the seasoned chicken slices to the skillet and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until fully cooked and lightly browned. Remove from heat and set aside.

2. Cook the Vegetables:

  • In the same skillet, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium heat.
  • Add the sliced onion and bell pepper and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until they are softened and slightly caramelized. Remove from heat.

3. Assemble the Sandwiches:

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Cut the hoagie rolls lengthwise, but don’t slice all the way through—leave them hinged.
  • Optional: Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on the inside of the rolls for added creaminess.
  • Layer the cooked chicken, followed by the sautéed onions and bell peppers on the bottom half of each roll.

4. Melt the Cheese:

  • Place a slice of provolone cheese over the chicken and veggies.
  • Place the sandwiches in the oven for 3-5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the rolls are slightly toasted.

5. Serve:

  • Remove from the oven and serve immediately, garnished with fresh herbs if desired. Enjoy your chicken cheese steak sandwiches!

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add jalapeños or a drizzle of hot sauce to the sandwich.
  • You can make this a low-carb meal by swapping the hoagie rolls with lettuce wraps.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 2 days. To reheat, warm the chicken and veggies in a skillet, then assemble on the roll.
